Wear it Out: Plaid. 4 New Ways to Wear an Old Favorite

Timeless. Classic. Universally adored.

Criss-crossed lines some Scots thought might be cool to put on their kilts for battle, has centuries later turned into the most versatile pattern of all time. Wow, bold statement. Think about it though. Plaid can conjure up thoughts of everything from high society British folk to cowboys, lumberjacks, hipsters, grunge rockers, and even skaters. Put the pattern on flannel and be ready to snuggle up by a fire in a wooden lodge in the Rocky Mountains. Wear it on a button down and pair it with a suit, and you're ready for a business meeting. Style it one way, it's edgy, style it another, it's preppy. What's my point? Plaid pieces can be bought with confidence knowing it's a pattern that not only has longevity, but incredible versatility. More expensive pieces with this pattern you can be sure are worth the investment, knowing in years to come it won't have become old hat. The best part is in 2015, you can find the awesome pattern on way more than just button downs. Take a look at some of my favorite ways to wear plaid pieces from my own wardrobe:

Plaid top: WHBM. Tights: WHBM. Skirt: BB Dakota. Sleeveless Coat: Casual Corner Essentials. Sheer Top: The Limited. Grey Metallic Tote: Stella&Dot. Leather boots: Bronx

This is a great plaid bodice/bustier top that White House Black Market came out with years ago. The structure and fit of this top give excellent support, making the shape flattering on almost every body type. The great fit and pattern, made this piece a fantastic purchase. Here, I've put a sheer top underneath it and then layered on a longer sleeveless jacket. Sleeveless jackets and long vests are all the rage this season and they instantly update any outfit in your wardrobe. Just layer on one of your favorite looks and go!

Plaid pants and top: WHBM. Necklace: Sutton Necklace Stella&Dot. Heels: Jessica Simpson. Grey Metallic Tote: Stella&Dot

I love these plaid pants. Any plaid pants really. They just look so darn sharp. I bought these last year and just love them! Perfect for the office, a lunch date, or if paired with sparkly top, a Christmas party!

Plaid Jacket: She Said... Leather Skirt: H&M. Tights: WHBM. Heels: Jessica Simpson

Leather, plaid, fun tights. As Maria von Trapp would say, "These are a few of my favorite things!". The leather skirt gives this plaid jacket a cool, edgy feel. The A-Line shape of the flared out skirt, however, balances out the leather edginess by giving the plaid just a little bit of school girl sweetness. It was perfect combo to create the big girl look I was going for. There's also something very British feeling about plaid when you put it with tights. This outfit literally pulls together 3 different vibes to create one cohesive, very polished look. Plaid is rad.

Plaid Flannel: Canyon Creek. Flared Grey Jeans: Celebrity Pink (Buffalo Exchange) Necklace: Zuni Necklace. Bracelets: Cady Wrap and Lynx Bangle. Grey Metallic Tote: Stella&Dot. Heels: Aldo

Yes, it's a flannel button down, but not the way you are used to seeing it. Skinny jeans and leggings are not the only way to rock your favorite flannel plaid this year. Try a a pair of bell bottom skinny flares. My color of choice is grey. It's a huge trend color this season and I love how it's a neutral that can go with just about anything. For example, the metallic grey tote from Stella&Dot has paired just beautifully with all my outfits this year.

Until next time,

Wear it Out!
